Sounds interesting

All this does sound interesting: Simple ways to fight pain.

Throat : If your throat tickles, scratch your ear : When the nerves in the ear are stimulated, it creates a reflex in the throat that can cause a muscle spasm. This spasm relieves the tickle.

Need to pee? No bathroom nearby? : Fantasize about Bips. Thinking about sex preoccupies your brain, so you won't feel as much discomfort.

Injections : Coughing during an injection can lessen the pain of the needle stick.

Sinus: An easy, quick, and cheap way to relieve sinus pressure is by alternately thrusting your tongue against the roof of your mouth, then pressing between your eyebrows with one finger.

Toothache : Cure your toothache without opening your mouth : Just rub ice on the back of your hand, on the V-shaped webbed area between your thumb and index finger. The nerve pathways at the base of that V stimulate an area of the brain that blocks pain signals from the face and hands.

Too much booze : One too many drinks left you dizzy? Put your hand on something stable. The part of your ear responsible for balance—the cupula—floats in a fluid of the same density as blood. As alcohol dilutes blood in the cupula, the cupula becomes less dense and rises. This confuses your brain. The tactile input from a stable object gives the brain a second opinion, and you feel more in balance.

On a date: Trying to quell first-date jitters? Blow on your thumb. The vagus nerve, which governs heart rate, can be controlled through breathing. It'll get your heart rate back to normal.

Headache : Press your tongue flat against the roof of your mouth, covering as much as you can. Since the nerves in the roof of your mouth get extremely cold, your body thinks your brain is freezing too. The more pressure you apply to the roof of your mouth, the faster your headache will subside.

How to remember things : Since most memory consolidation happens during sleep, anything you read right before bed is more likely to be encoded as long-term memory.

GBM-PVL

Ganpati Bappa ...
Purcha ...

Its that time of the year when God is worshipped all over Bombay, Maharashtra and India in the form of Ganesh or Ganpati. Its a ten day festival and the city does sport a festive look if one might say. Perhaps some soccur from the glum and gloomy rainy days.

On a communal note : I read somewhere that the Mah. Govt. is considering to shift the main immersion point for the Jumbo Ganesh's to Bandra Bandstand from the existing Girgaum Chowpatty. Perhaps this will lead to increased communcal harmony.

Fast Good Cheap

At the most you can only have two of these.

Applicable to almost anything ... things, events, actions ...

Most of the time. Very few exceptions.

Lets blog ...

Its been a long time since I wrote in these pages. Actually its been over a month now. Nothing too much done or that has happened over this time. After the bombs went off.

RANDOM BLOGS OF WOOD

Compensation

I had heard that the govt. was going to cut income tax from the compensation amount that was given to the families of those killed in the blasts. A nice way to rake in your own money. Its a double-edged thing - lessen the population and earn more. We do have a great finance minister.

Freedom

Independance Day. Flags fluttering. Speeches. Promises. Rain. And then go back to your sweat and pain. The flag does help.

Lies

Saw a website to detect lies. The last line was good : Be careful how often you use this with your friends. If you are always looking for lies, you may soon not have any friends. Use wisdom.

BEST Passes

The GFN (Good-For-Nothing) BEST has introduced a daily pass scheme. You can get a ticket of 50 bucks and roam around in any bus (except AC's and Exp.) till mid-night. Good scheme but likely to fail .... the passes will be available only at depots ( perhaps only Wadala !! ) - so first troop upto W and get your pass. That means having spent some 12 bucks and one hour (on an average) getting to W. So time and money wasted. Instead why cant the normal bus conductors issue the pass in the buses. Ask for a "Pass-Ticket" so that it can be used for the rest of the day.

Lets be positive

The BEST should also introduce monthly anywhere-anybus-anytime passes. Like the train boys have. But are we being too positive.

Water and 4.5 m and high tides

Its been raining. And no signs of stopping. Frustration all over. Floods. Drains. The BMC says that if the tide goves over 4.5 m the city will flood. This is because the drain flood gates are at 4.5 m and if the sea level goes over that level then water cant drain out. Now the thing is that a lot of people think that if its high tide it will rain heavily ( and vice-versa too !!! ) !!! . So the BMC plays it safe and cool. Johny and his boys go on drinking sprees while the city swims in flood waters. They just blame it on the tides and continue drinking. And by the time the city folks realise the truth ( after reading this blog ) , its already past the monsoon and has stopped raining. So Johny goes on his drinking spree till next June ... No wonder Johny is an IAS.

LNL

I had been to LNL some time back. Fortunatley it wasnt raining too much on those days and so could see around the place in considerable detail. It was nice going upto the viewing points and all. The entire place and the ghat sections were covered in green. This is indeed the best time to visit LNL. And another good decision was not to go on a weekend , for then LNL is more crowded than a BVI local. I was surprised to know that LNL is at around 600-700 MSL whereas SBC is around 900 MSL. LNL is a hill station.
